*With the release of Prospect 2.0, we now support FBX files. We recommend exporting to an FBX file from 3ds Max, rather than an OBJ.
*Note for 3ds Max 2019 and newer: The latest version of 3ds Max no longer supports Autodesk Standard materials, and the default material option is now an Autodesk Physical Material. These materials cannot be exported to FBX or OBJ files, so they will not appear in Prospect. For this or other material libraries, a workaround you can use to export these materials is to convert them to Scanline Standard materials.
Software platforms write to OBJ files in different ways, so you may experience varying performance or need to take different steps when exporting from third party software. In some cases, you may find that loading your OBJ file into software that Prospect is natively integrated with, such as Rhino, and then launching through our add-in will produce superior results and allow you to better maintain the fidelity of your OBJ file.
Follow these steps in order to successfully produce an OBJ and MTL file that works with IrisVR Prospect with 3ds Max.
1. Before exporting, create a new folder on your computer where you will save the OBJ and texture files. Open Asset Tracking in 3ds Max.
2. Select all of the Full Paths under Maps / Shaders and right click to open a Menu
3. Select 'Make Path Relative to Project Folder'
4. Exit out of Asset Tracking
5. Select Export
4. Select OBJ in the dropdown and name your file
5. Make sure the options look like below
6. Select Map-Export and make sure 'Use map-path' is unchecked.
7. Maintain the format as JPG
8. Select Export. The resulting folder should look something like this, with the various textures used in your file visible as images:
9. Drag and Drop your file into Prospect and launch!
You may experience incompatibility when using the layers function with an OBJ file, in which case we recommend using a native file format.
